UPD meets success in 3rd Asian Universities Debating Championship Jessica Hermosa | May 2007
The 3rd Asian Universities Debating Championship (AUDC), held at the Institut Teknologi Bandung last May 9 to 16, proved to be a success for the University of the Philippines Debate Society, with all five members of the contingent qualifying for the final series.
Octofinalists Richard Beltran (II- Pol Sci), Aaron Chan (I- Bio) and Richard Heydarian (III- Pol Sci) of UPD-Team A emerged 9th out of 60 teams, beating out participants from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Adjudicators Miya David (III- Comparative Literature) and Bernard Joseph Guerrero (III- English) also got into the finals series, making it a 100% break for the contingent. Guerrero adjudicated up until the Grand Finals with 9 other top adjudicators of the tournament. David adjudicated the octofinals of the main tournament and up to the Semifinals of the English as Foreign Language division.
As the smallest contingent UPD has fielded, this is was a special feat for the Society and is a testament to the training that the Society' has invested in its members. The AUDC achievements came just after UPDS bagged the silver in the recently concluded Philippine Inter-collegiate Debating Championship held in Tarlac last April. Currently, the Society’s members are preparing for the upcoming Australasians debate tournament to be held in Malaysia this July.
