The third Philippine Inter-collegiate Debating Championship held last April 15-20, 2009 in University of the Philippines, Diliman marked one of UP Debate Society's strongest performance in years.
Diliman debaters bag honors at Nationals November 2008
Among 24 institutions that participated in the 10th National Debate Championship held last Oct. 20-25 at the Ateneo de Davao University, the University of the Philippines Debate Society (UPDS) reaped numerous recognitions and reached the finals of the British Parliamentary format tournament.
UP Diliman dominates Inter-Varsities Debate September 2008
The UP Diliman Debate Society took home several awards at the 3rd UP Inter-Varsities League Debate Tournament held last September 13-15 at the UP Los Banos campus.
Team Sunken Garden A, composed of Niccolo Cabrera (alumnus, BS Psychology 2007) and Claire Jiao (IV-BA Journalism) bagged the championship, while two other UPD teams, UPD A with Jon-Jon Avila (IV-BA Speech Communications) and Alvin Camba (IV-BA History), and UPD G with Richard Beltran (IV-BA Political Science) and Melissa Sayoc (IV-BS Business Economics), also made it to the Finals round of the competition.
After eight gruelling rounds at the Fourth Asian Universities Debate Championship held at the International Islamic University Malaysia last May 14 to 22, both UP Diliman 1 and 2 secured spots in the main break to become two of the five Filipino teams to reach the Top 16.
Forty-two high school debaters were put to the test as they engaged in a battle of wits at the Fast Forward 2008 last May 2 to 3 at the School of Economics in UP Diliman.

Five out of UPDS' six teams placed in the top 16 teams of the Philippine Inter-collegiate Debating Championship 2008: The Sun Life Cup, which qualified them to compete in the Finals Series. With 5 teams, UP Diliman was the institution with the most number of teams in the Finals Series.
Diliman teams rank in the top half of Worlds 2008 January 2008
All three of the UP Debate Society teams that competed in the 2008 World Universities Debate Championship in Thailand ranked in the top half of the tournament. UPD-A?s Claire Jiao (Journ) and Melissa Sayoc (Bus Econ), UPD-B?s Aaron Chan (Pol Sci) and Anna Arcellana (Bio), and UPD-C?s Kenneth Cardenas (Socio) and Yang Villa (Econ) ranked 70th, 139th, and 173rd respectively out of 396 teams from all over the world.
After a 3-year absence because of financial constraints, UPDS members were able to re-stake a presence in the prestigious international tournament and have come away with people?s renewed recognition of the University?s debating prowess.
